Hey there, fellow part-time entrepreneur!
Today, I want to share my personal experience with side hustles that can help you earn an extra $1000 a month while still working a full-time job. This article is inspired by a couple of my digital mentors Chris Do and Gary Vee, who have both shown me the incredible potential of side hustles.
1. Freelancing with your skills As a designer, I took inspiration from Chris Do and decided to explore the world of freelancing. With platforms like Fiverr and Instagram, however there is also Upwork, and Freelancer, it's easy to find clients who need your skills. In my case, I started offering logo/brand design, social media graphics, and other design services - I found my best success freelancing through Instagram, during the 2020-2021 lockdown this side hustle boomed for me. Spending a few hours in the evenings and weekends, I was able to generate a steady income stream at an average of $250 per client with a pipeline of usually 3-6 clients a month.
2. Flipping items on eBay Gary Vee's famous "Trash Talk" series got me into the flipping game for a brief period during 2020 lockdown. I started looking at what I didn’t need in my home, looking for items to resell on eBay - though going to garage sales as Gary does is also great I didn’t have the courage for it. With a little research, a house cleanout and a keen eye for valuable items - in my case luxury goods like old wallets, watches, and jewelry - I managed to turn a profit though not consistently as it depends on the item, one month I made $3,000, another month I made just a little over $1,000. It's not only a great way to earn extra cash, but it's also a fun treasure-hunting experience.
3. Print-on-demand business Using platforms like Printify, Teespring, and Redbubble, I started my own print-on-demand business. I used my design skills to create unique t-shirt designs, posters, and other merchandise. These platforms handle the printing, shipping, and customer service, allowing me to focus on all things creative in my free time, such as the design and marketing. My best month was approximately $1,200 in sales profit however depending on your designs you may find a sudden growth or drop in sales as trends come and go. The best part? There's no upfront investment or inventory to manage.
4. Social media management I decided to capitalize on my social media know-how and started offering social media management services to local small businesses. My biggest client was Seiko - a Japanese luxury watch brand - managing their social content and campaign pipeline which boosted their brand presence and sales. This SMM hustle involves creating content, scheduling posts, and engaging with the audience on behalf of clients. You can easily do this in your spare time and earn a significant amount of money if you have a knack for creating engaging content and growing online communities.
5. Teaching a skill or hobby Inspired by Chris Do's philosophy of "Learn, Do, Teach," I began teaching my skills to others through local in-person and online workshops for design thinking and freelancing, however you can also teach through platforms like Skillshare and Teachable. By creating and delivering workshops on design, I was able to share my knowledge with people eager to learn and upskill. This allowed me to make 4-figure profits monthly with minimal overhead costs for a period of time.
These side hustles have not only brought me an extra $1000 a month, but they've also opened doors to new opportunities and personal growth which is priceless. Remember, the key to success is discovery, consistency and dedication. Start small, and as Chris Do says, "Make something every day." (Seth Godin also said something similar) You'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
Happy hustling 😎
